Itron Celebrates 25 Years of Shaping the Future of Water Management in Australia at OzWater
LIBERTY LAKE, Wash. — May 15, 2025 — Itron, Inc. (NASDAQ: ITRI), which is innovating new ways for utilities and cities to manage energy and water, celebrates a monumental milestone in helping shape the water sector in Australia, recognizing its 25th anniversary of working with utilities and cities across the region to better manage energy and water.
Itron has collaborated with water utilities across Australia operating in urban and densely populated areas such as Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane as well as rural and remote locations extending from Yunyarinyi and Mimili in South Australia to Milingimbi and Gunbalanya in the Northern Territory and to Leonara and the Pilbara in Western Australia. All of these collaborations share a common goal, which is to improve the management of water resources for a sustainable and efficient future.
From deploying Automated Meter Reading (AMR) and Advanced Meter Infrastructure, to the introduction of residential and commercial Itron’s Intelis® wSource ultrasonic digital meters to celebrating more than 50 deployments of Itron’s Temetra® solution. Itron’s technologies continue to help water utilities reduce water loss and enhance customer service. Itron’s journey to improving water management throughout Australia has included highlights such as:
-
First Tapping into the Australian Water Market: During the early 2000s, the region was focused on water conservation due to the “Millennium Drought,” the worst drought on record for southeast Australia. The vast majority of water meter readings were collected manually or infrequently. Itron’s journey in Australia began by addressing these challenges, first introducing its AMR and digital meter reading solutions.
-
Itron’s Recent Innovative Technology: From improving the safety of field workers with remote meter reading to reducing non-revenue water and enhancing customer service, Itron’s latest technology solutions address these pressing challenges. To help utilities further reduce water loss and improve insight into the water network, Itron unveiled Temetra, a globally adopted cloud-based platform that streamlines and unifies meter data collection, analysis and management. Temetra has demonstrated scalability, accommodating thousands of customers ranging in size from several hundred meters to several million, with more than 40 million endpoints hosted globally. Most recently, Itron launched the Itron Intelis wSource NB-IoT water meter to quickly detect leaks and provide more accurate billing to customers.
Itron will showcase Temetra and its Intelis wSource water meter, including newly launched mid-size range (25-50mm), at OzWater 2025 from 20 to 22 May in Itron booth E11. Attendees are invited to learn how Itron’s Smart Water Solutions can help solve water scarcity, operational efficiency and sustainability challenges. Water utilities can tackle these challenges by gaining enhanced visibility into their distribution system through a suite of advanced devices, networks and platforms designed to collect, manage and integrate data.
“Embarking on our journey in Australia during the Millennium Drought created both challenges and opportunities for Itron. We developed new and innovative solutions to help utilities and cities conserve water during one of the most intense droughts in the region. This period also allowed us to build lasting relationships with these utilities and cities, helping them continuously improve their operations and achieve their water conservation goals,” said Bruce Kain, Itron’s director of water for Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. “Looking ahead, the future is bright as Itron helps our customers in Australia and around the world address the impacts of pressing challenges, including aging infrastructure, extreme weather and increased demand.”
