2024 Corporate Sustainability Report: Itron’s Commitment to Create a More Resourceful World

June 18, 2025

At Itron, sustainability isn’t just an initiative—it’s central to everything we do. In our 2024 Corporate Sustainability Report, we showcase how our purpose-driven approach continues to deliver value for customers and communities across the globe. Guided by four ESG pillars—Operating with Integrity, Providing Sustainable Solutions, Improving Our Environmental Impact and Supporting Our People and Communities—Itron’s progress in 2024 reflects our continued commitment to create a more resourceful world.

Engaging Key Stakeholders

As expectations around corporate sustainability continue to evolve, understanding what truly matters—both to our business and to the world around us—is critical. In 2024, Itron completed its first enterprise-wide double materiality assessment (DMA), a key milestone in aligning our ESG strategy with evolving regulatory requirements and stakeholder priorities. This rigorous, multiphase process evaluated both the impact of our operations on people and the planet, and the financial materiality of sustainability-related risks to our business. The results help ensure that our commitments remain relevant, measurable and actionable.

Operating with Integrity

Itron is committed to operating responsibly and ethically in all that we do—and to holding ourselves accountable every step of the way. In 2024, 100% of employees completed the Code of Conduct training and nearly 90% of the Board remained independent. We also earned recognition from MSCI and Sustainalytics for maintaining a low-risk ESG profile, demonstrating our values-driven leadership, growing trust among stakeholders and strong ESG credibility.

Providing Sustainable Solutions

As utilities face growing challenges from aging infrastructure, Itron’s solutions are helping them operate more efficiently, achieve decarbonization goals and deliver more resilient service. In 2024 alone, our technologies enabled customers to avoid at least 7.5 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions. These avoided emissions were primarily achieved by reducing the need for field service visits, improving voltage management and enabling customers to shift behavior with time-of-use rates and energy portals.

Itron’s impact spans sectors and geographies. Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E), one of the largest utilities in North America, are collaborating to leverageItron’s meters to manage electric vehicle charging loads in real time, helping prevent outages without costly infrastructure upgrades. In Tasmania, our Temetra platform is modernizing operations and reducing water loss for TasWater, the single water and sewage utility in the region. Meanwhile, nearly 200,000 Cielis-managed smart streetlights are improving both energy efficiency and urban mobility in Paris.

Improving Our Environmental Impact

At Itron, we ’re not just enabling sustainable outcomes—we’re actively holding ourselves accountable to them. Since 2019, we’ve reduced our Scope 1 and 2 emissions by more than 50% and are committed to reaching carbon neutrality by 2035 and net-zero emissions by 2050. Additional key milestones in 2024 include:

  • Achieving ISO 14001 certification across all manufacturing facilities
  • Receiving SBTi approval for our near-term targets
  • Expanding our emissions tracking
  • Maintaining impeccable safety performance

While total waste increased as a result of higher production volumes, waste intensity declined, reflecting greater efficiency in our operations. We also expanded our recycling and employee education efforts. Itron’s water usage remains relatively low as we implement ongoing improvements to our monitoring and conservation practices.

Supporting Our People and Communities

At the heart of our sustainability strategy are the people who power our company. In 2024, we expanded leadership development programs and grew our “iBelong” employee resource network to 40+ active groups. A companywide employee survey demonstrated further progress in this area, with 94% of respondents indicating their intent to stay with Itron. Additionally, our workplace culture earned accolades from Newsweek and U.S. News & World Report, affirming our longstanding commitment to fostering a workplace where everyone can thrive.

Equally important to supporting our employees is investing in our communities. Last year, Itron employees contributed more than 700 volunteer hours, and we invested over $1 million in philanthropy, educational outreach and community engagement. We also supported the future workforce by launching apprenticeships and internship programs.

The Journey to a More Sustainable Future Continues

As we continue our journey toward a more sustainable future, Itron’s focus remains on innovation that meets the moment and anticipates tomorrow’s needs. In 2025 and beyond, we look forward to enhancing the capabilities of our Grid Edge Intelligence portfolio and accelerating the use of artificial intelligence to optimize operations and deliver smarter, more responsive solutions. Additionally, continued investment in agile infrastructure and a unified platform will empower our customers to manage growing complexity, enabling them to deliver safe, reliable and resilient services to the communities they serve. Together, we’re well on our way to creating a more resourceful world.
